Ham Exam Tips

June 18, 2025

If you can pass Technician, you are half way to passing General and Extra. General and Extra are just more varied technology and more rules.

When you pass General, take the Extra at the same test session if testers allow. You may get lucky and it doesn't hurt. Same for when you pass Technician, take the General. The step up is higher, but give it a shot if you have enough time and energy.

Focus on correct answers. The 2023-27 General study guide starts each section with relevant questions and correct answers. The 2020-24 Extra study guide only showed questions at the starts, with answers buried in text. Hopefully ARRL improved that in the new version.

The entire question bank is at the back of the guides, with answers and study page references. Use it for practice, and review any weak topics.

If you have any difficult areas, make a list of reminders to look at often and shortly before the test. A list of simplified formulas may help too. Approximate solutions can get close enough to pick the right answer from the four choices.

There are some good preparation videos online, if you like videos. Using more than one format for studying may help the information sink in.

Take the opportunity to learn, but remember the license is "a license to learn more". Have fun with it. My cram for Extra was on vacation at the beach. Study, practice, wade, nap, repeat. Pass. Life is good(TM).
